Use the word for its meaning

A word such as after becomes more useful when your child sees how it connects ideas: “We play after lunch.” Ask what happens first and what happens next.

Try could in “I could build a tower.” Talk about something your child might do. Short sentences can support a conversation about meaning without adding a long reading task.

In Sightseed, reviewed sentences can draw on a child's interests, such as soccer, ponies, art, dinosaurs, or ice cream. Meaning and correct grammar come first.

Notice spelling, then return another day

  • Missing letters: notice the letter that completes a familiar word.
  • Typing: hear the word and type it in a separate ten-round practice.
  • Sentence activities: use reviewed examples for familiar words as practice difficulty increases.

Repeat short sessions across days. Sightseed revisits words that were recently difficult, includes easier successes, and spaces reviews of learned words.

Grow a useful vocabulary, not just a score

After practice, look for one of the words in a book you read together and talk about what it means there. App progress is one observation, not proof of independent book reading.

Keep school and home connected: use the teacher's weekly word list. Parents see which answers were first-try and which needed help.

A reason to return to practice

Each finished practice session earns a drop of water for your child's private garden. They choose which flower or vegetable to water, and a bunny shares the scene.

Questions parents ask

How many words are on the Dolch first-grade list?
The Dolch first-grade list contains 41 words, shown below. This is one starter list, not a universal requirement for every first grader.
Can my first grader practice earlier lists?
Yes. Parents can choose words from earlier lists or use the teacher's assignments. Reviewing a familiar word is part of practice, not a setback.
Does Sightseed teach spelling patterns?
Missing-letter and typing activities help children attend to the letters in practiced words. Sightseed is not a systematic phonics or spelling curriculum; use it alongside classroom instruction.
Will every custom word have a sentence?
No. Reviewed sentence content is used where available. Unsupported custom words receive word-only practice instead of a made-up or misleading sentence.
